Julianne Moore will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 21st Rome Film Fest, where she is scheduled to be honored during the festival screening of her latest film, The Debut. The event is set to run from October 13 through October 25, with Moore’s appearance adding another significant milestone to a career marked by acclaimed performances across film and television.
Jesse Eisenberg to Present the Career Honor
The award will be presented by Jesse Eisenberg, who directs, writes, produces and stars alongside Moore in The Debut. The A24 musical comedy will be screened as part of the festival’s Grand Public section, bringing the two actors together for a special presentation that recognizes Moore’s work over several decades.
The festival’s announcement described the honor as a celebration of Moore’s extensive career. Eisenberg’s involvement also gives the presentation a direct connection to the actress’s latest project, in which he serves as both her director and co-star.
Moore’s Award-Winning Career
Moore has built one of the most respected acting careers in contemporary American cinema, earning major recognition from both Hollywood and international film institutions. She won the Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for her performance in Still Alice, the 2015 drama in which she portrayed a woman living with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Her television work has also brought major acclaim. In 2012, Moore won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin in Jay Roach’s political drama Game Change. The performance further demonstrated her ability to move between film and television while taking on dramatically different roles.
A Rare Achievement Across European Festivals
Moore also holds a distinctive place in European film festival history. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she is the only American woman to have won top acting honors at the three major European festivals.
Her international festival recognition includes the Best Actress prize at the Venice Film Festival for Far From Heaven in 2002, the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival for The Hours in 2003, and the Best Actress honor at the Cannes Film Festival for Maps to the Stars in 2014.
From Altman to Almodovar
Throughout her career, Moore has worked with some of the most prominent filmmakers in international cinema. Her credits include Robert Altman’s Short Cuts, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights and Magnolia, Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven and May December, as well as Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door.
That body of work has allowed Moore to move comfortably between independent cinema, major studio productions, television projects and auteur-driven films. Her performances have frequently placed her in complex dramatic roles while also allowing her to explore comedy and unconventional characters.
The Debut Heads to Rome
The Debut premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and has attracted attention ahead of the awards season. Moore plays a reserved New Jersey housewife who receives a small acting role in a local theater production.
The film centers on the production’s demanding director, portrayed by Paul Giamatti. Eisenberg directs the movie and also appears on screen, creating a project that brings together several established performers.
The Rome Film Fest will screen The Debut in its Grand Public section during the festival’s 21st edition. Moore’s Lifetime Achievement Award presentation is expected to serve as a key moment of the Rome event, linking her latest screen performance with a broader celebration of her long-standing contribution to cinema.
