Tamil Nadu Weather Update: IMD predicts rain and rising temperatures till July 5

Chennai: The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast a mix of rain and scorching heat across Tamil Nadu over the next few days. While parts of the state may experience thundershowers, temperatures are expected to remain above normal, causing discomfort in several regions.

Light to moderate thundershowers are likely in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today. Chennai may witness partly cloudy skies with a chance of moderate rain in some areas. The weather department predicts similar conditions until July 5, with rainfall intensity varying—light showers expected on July 1 and 2, followed by increased thunderstorm activity on July 3. By July 4 and 5, scattered light to moderate rain is anticipated in certain districts.

Tamil Nadu weather this week: Heatwave-Like Conditions Persist

Despite the possibility of rain, temperatures remain high in many places including Chennai. Over the next three days (June 30 to July 2), maximum temperatures are expected to be 2-3°C above normal in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Chennai is likely to see a high of around 38°C, with night-time temperatures hovering at 28-29°C. The combination of heat, humidity, and elevated minimum temperatures may cause discomfort, prompting authorities to advise against unnecessary outdoor exposure, especially for children and the elderly.

Recent Weather Patterns

On June 28, heavy rainfall was recorded in several districts, with Chinnakallar in Coimbatore receiving 9 cm of rain. Other regions, including Cuddalore, Virudhachalam, Villupuram, Theni, and the Nilgiris, also experienced showers. However, the respite from heat was short-lived, as eight districts reported temperatures exceeding 100°F (37.8°C). Madurai recorded the highest temperature at 40.2°C, followed by Tiruchirappalli (39.1°C) and Thanjavur (39°C). Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam in Chennai registered 38.1°C and 37.7°C, respectively.

The Meteorological Department has warned that while intermittent rain may provide temporary relief, the overall trend of above-normal temperatures is likely to continue, urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid peak afternoon heat.
