IndiGo’s ‘Flight Plan’: 6 international routes closed, but preparations to rule the skies by 2030

Even though the country’s largest airline company IndiGo may not be going through good days, the company has claimed that it will double its business by the year 2030. Indigo on Monday presented a big plan for its growth to the world. The company aims to almost double its operations by financial year 2030. For this, the company is focusing on international expansion, long distance flights, premium travel services and new sources of earning, so that it can become a global aviation company.

This strategy has come at a time when IndiGo is trying to improve its international network amid difficult circumstances. Earlier this month, the airline had announced a temporary halt to flights to six international destinations between July and September. The reasons for this were said to be seasonally low demand and “very difficult cost conditions”. The company also said it would stop service to Manchester from August 31 and return one of its six ‘damp-leased’ Boeing 787 Dreamliners due to high operating costs and airspace constraints.

Presenting its vision at ‘Analyst Day 2026’, IndiGo said it aims to reach about 20 crore (200 million) passengers annually by FY 2030, from 12.3 crore (123 million) in FY 2026. The airline also plans to increase the number of daily flights from the current 2,200 to about 3,000 and expand its fleet to more than 550 aircraft.

The company described its FY2030 vision as one of “large scale and strong impact” and said it is “on its way to becoming a leading global aviation player. With this new outlook, the airline plans to expand its presence in long-haul international routes, premium travel segment, cargo operations and other related businesses while maintaining its low-cost foundation. IndiGo shares on BSE at 10.27 am on Monday They were trading at Rs 4,370 per share, falling 2.42 per cent.

Special emphasis on international growth

International expansion is most important in the next phase of IndiGo’s growth. The airline expects that by 2030, the share of international capacity in its total capacity will be around 40 percent. In fact, it is expanding its reach in Asia, Europe and other long distance markets. Describing its international strategy, the airline said that our global growth engine is turning fast.

IndiGo’s international network has expanded from five destinations and 12 routes in FY 2016 to 44 destinations and more than 150 routes in FY 2026. During this period, the number of daily international flights has increased almost ten times. The airline said it is “launching flights to new destinations around the world” as it adds new destinations in the Middle East, South-East Asia, Central Asia, Africa and Europe to its network.

Long haul aircraft will open new markets

The inclusion of Airbus A321XLR aircraft and Airbus A350 widebody jets will be an important step in taking forward the international strategy. IndiGo expects to receive nine A321XLR aircraft in financial year 2027. These aircraft are capable of flying for approximately 8.5 hours and will help in launching services to destinations such as Athens, Istanbul, Bali and Seoul while synergizing with the airline’s existing Airbus fleet structure. The airline said that these aircraft will support the “long-haul but low-demand international market” and the growing opportunities of international-to-international traffic in India, without causing any major operational disruption to the company. Will help in expanding.

More focus on premium travelers

Along with expanding the network, IndiGo is also focusing more on premium and business travelers through its ‘IndiGo-Stretch’ service. The airline expects that as the service expands to more aircraft and routes, the number of daily premium seats will increase from the current 2,800 to more than 4,300 by March 2027. IndiGo describes ‘Stretch’ as “a targeted premium service for a niche market” as it seeks to attract high-income travelers while maintaining its value-focused identity.

Growth will come from cargo and other services

The airline expects that the share of income from cargo and other services (ancillary) in its earnings will increase in the coming years. It is estimated that cargo volume will increase from approximately 360,000 tonnes in FY 2026 to more than 450,000 tonnes by FY 2030. IndiGo said it is providing cargo services on a large scale by increasing its global reach and capacity through belly cargo capacity, freighter operations and the use of wide-body aircraft in future.

Apart from cargo, the airline said that ancillary revenue (income from other services) per passenger has increased by 30 percent in the last five years. Paid seating, baggage products, upgrades, AI-based services and marketplace offerings have contributed to this. IndiGo said it is building a “future-ready ancillary ecosystem” with the aim of increasing revenues beyond ticket sales.

The airline’s ‘blue chip’ loyalty program is expected to play a big role in this strategy. IndiGo said that within 20 months of its launch, the number of members of this program has crossed 11 million (1.1 crore) and this is part of its effort to create an ecosystem beyond aviation. The company said it is focusing on “expanding the loyalty-based retail ecosystem” through financial, travel, lifestyle and commerce partnerships.

disciplined growth

While targeting rapid expansion, IndiGo has repeatedly stressed that growth will be measured and financially disciplined. The airline ended FY2026 with a free cash balance of Rs 362 billion and said it will continue to invest in fleet, infrastructure, technology and talent while maintaining financial strength. The management said the airline’s strategy is based on “diversification with discipline” and a continued focus on cost leadership.

After dealing with aircraft grounding, supply-chain issues and operational disruptions in recent years, the company expects capacity growth to pick up again from fiscal 2027. Looking ahead, IndiGo said it is focusing on “sustainable growth”. The company is expanding its domestic and international reach and is moving towards achieving its goal of becoming a major global airline.
