Who doesn’t want to save money on a big purchase? And when the savings are Rs. 7.30 lakh, it’s more than what some brand-new cars in India cost! It sounds too good to be true, but a Rs. 21 lakh SUV is now available for a lot less. And no, this isn’t a festive season discount or an exchange bonus. Here’s what’s going on.
This SUV Gets A Big Price Cut
It is the Tata Harrier EV, the brand’s electric flagship. Tata Motors has now started offering a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) scheme with this SUV, which brings the starting price down to Rs. 14.49 lakh. While the standard model starts at Rs. 21.79 lakh (ex-showroom), this cut results in upfront savings of Rs. 7.30 lakh.
Note: The BaaS price applies to the entry-level variant with the 65kWh battery. The usage cost excludes charging and is based on 60km of daily running.
Tata EV BaaS – How Does This Work?
In simple words, you buy the car and the battery separately. The battery isn’t part of the vehicle price, so the upfront amount you pay comes down. You can still buy the car the regular way, with the battery included.
Is It Really Cheaper?
Here is the catch. It is not a direct discount or savings, but a way to split the cost; what you save upfront moves into the battery payments. Here is a rough idea. At Rs. 5.9/km and 60km of daily use, the battery cost comes to around Rs. 10,600 a month (our calculation, assuming a 30-day month).
That said, if you drive a lot, run the numbers over the full loan tenure before you decide. If your running is modest, or you want to keep the upfront outlay low, BaaS can make a lot of sense. Tata says customers want more flexibility in how they finance an EV, and this option is meant to deliver that.
