Fauth to Indian apps
Three cabinet ministers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are promoting ‘Made in India’ apps instead of foreign apps like Google Maps, WhatsApp and Microsoft. This step has been taken amidst trade tension with America, which is the biggest effort to support ‘indigenous’ products so far. In August, the US imposed 50% tariff on Indian imports, after which PM Modi emphasized ‘indigenous’ products.
Last month, he appealed to the people to quit daily use of foreign things. IT minister Ashwini Vaishnav recently told in a presentation that the slides of highway projects were made from Joho software instead of Microsoft PowerPoint and map of Mapmindia was used in place of Google Maps. He smiled and said that this is a map of mapmindia, not of Google Maps. Looks good, don’t you? indigenous! Last week, the Union Minister shared a video of Joho software and posted on X and asked people to adopt indigenous products, which was viewed 62 lakh times.
Strong hold of American brands
American brands are everywhere in India and people consider them a status symbol. Microsoft products are used in government and private offices, travelers rely on Google Maps and WhatsApp has more than 50 crore users, which makes India its largest market. Google, WhatsApp and Microsoft did not comment about this. On the other hand, Joho gives a cheaper option of Microsoft’s cloud-based tools. Its founder Sridhar is famous for running business operations in Vambu villages. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also supported Joho’s messaging app ‘Artertai’ (‘Chat’ in Tamil, which increased its popularity.
