Narendra Berwal has guaranteed himself a medal at the after a commanding victory over Athapong Sangtap in the quarterfinals of the men’s 90+ kg category.
The match took place on Sunday at the Nishio Gymnasium, where Narendra showcased his skills with powerful and precise punches, forcing his opponent to face two standing counts. The referee ultimately stopped the contest, declaring Narendra the winner. He will now face world champion Aibek Orlabek in the semifinals.
Narendra previously earned a bronze medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Games and recently secured silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking India’s third boxing medal at these Games following accolades from Ankush Panghal and Parveen Hooda.
In contrast, Sachin Sivach faced disappointment in the men’s 60 kg quarterfinals, losing to Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto. The bronze medalist from the 2025 World Championships outperformed Sachin, winning by a unanimous decision of 5-0. Sachin struggled in the early rounds, losing the first round 1-4 and falling behind 0-5 in the second. Although he attempted a comeback in the third round, winning it 4-1, the overall score remained 29-28 in favor of the Japanese boxer.
Meanwhile, Parveen Hooda secured her medal in the women’s 65 kg category by defeating Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0 in the quarterfinals. Parveen controlled the match effectively, using her reach and speed to keep Khamidova at bay while landing punches at opportune moments. The silver medalist from the 2025 World Championships struggled to make an impact, while Parveen’s quick combinations and counterattacks earned her a unanimous victory on all five judges’ scorecards.
