Nishad, Simran bag gold as India clinch fourth spot in World Para Athletics Championships

New Delhi: Nishad Kumar and Simran Sharma bagged their maiden gold medals at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 on Friday. By virtue of these two coveted medals, India have climbed to the fourth spot in the list with four medals on October 3.

While Nishad won by equalling his PB in Men’s T47 High Jump with an incredible jump of 2.14m, Simran bagged the gold with her guide runner with a PB of 11.95 sec in Women’s 100m T12. This proved to be the most productive day for India thus far. Earlier, Preethi Pal and Pardeep Kumar added a bronze each in the 200m and discus throw respectively, swelling India’s tally and pushing the hosts three places up from seventh.

India at fourth with 15 medals

India have now bagged a total of six gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze taking the total tally in the competition to 15 medals. With just two more days left in the Championships, the host nation is on course to better their best medal haul of 17 achieved in Kobe, Japan back in 2024.

Simran, who hails from Delhi, bagged India’s first gold of the day, clinching the women’s 100m T12 final with a personal best time of 11.95 seconds for her maiden title in the event. She had won gold in the 200m event in the last edition in Japan and a bronze in the 2024 Paralympics. Simran is yet to participate in the 200m at the competition.

Meanwhile, Brazil continued to lead the table with 12 gold, 18 silver and 7 bronze, followed by China (9-16-13) and Poland (8-2-5). India have a chance of getting elevated in the points table in the remaining days of the competition.
