Dhoni disciple secures sensational victory for struggling Puri Titans
Puri Titans batter Aashirwad Swain kept his nerves steady to secure a thrilling two-wicket victory against Keonjhar Miners at Barabati Stadium.
Regional franchise cricket across India has increasingly become a crucial platform for discovering exceptional grassroots talent from smaller towns. Chasing a target of 141 in the Bharat Masala Odisha T20 League – CM Trophy, Puri found themselves struggling heavily at 113/8 by the 18th over. Keonjhar Miners had earlier posted a respectable 140/9 despite early setbacks in their innings. With only two wickets remaining, Swain needed to score 15 runs off the final six deliveries to win the match. He backed his skills completely and successfully guided his team across the finish line with a spectacular display of hitting.
Drawing inspiration from captain cool
Swain credits his ability to handle late-game pressure directly to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He actually picked up cricket after watching Dhoni hit the historic winning six against Sri Lanka during the 2011 World Cup final at Wankhede Stadium. Swain noticed that the ball was arriving late on the pitch during Friday’s contest. He reasoned that taking the match deep would eventually force the opposition bowlers to panic under pressure. He stated that his main tactical plan was to stay on the crease until the very end of the innings. He believed entirely in his ability to chase down any run requirement in that last over. Swain has watched countless match videos of his idol to study the precise art of finishing tight games.
Sporting idols and expert mentorship
Cricket is not his only source of motivation on the field. Swain proudly wears jersey number 19 to honour global football icon Lionel Messi, who wore that exact same number early in his professional career. Growing up in Rourkela, he struggled to find quality coaching facilities to develop his game. His recent success stems directly from intensive off-season training in Mumbai with former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer. After struggling with his form in the previous season, Swain contacted Jaffer, who had previously coached the Odisha state team. Jaffer graciously invited him to train in Mumbai, which gave Swain immense batting confidence. Swain also praised the strong team culture within the Puri Titans dressing room. He explained that all players committed to fighting until the final ball regardless of the immediate match situation. This specific mindset and daily process directly produced their stunning Friday night victory.
