MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Brewers have decided to option left-hander Robert Gasser to Triple-A Nashville just one day after his performance in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he failed to maintain a three-run lead.
On Sunday, the Brewers announced the recall of right-hander Carlos Rodriguez, who will take Gasser’s place on the active roster.
Robert Gasser’s Performance
Gasser, who is set to turn 27 on May 31, recorded an 0-1 record with a 6.48 ERA during his time with the Brewers, striking out seven while walking six across 8 1/3 innings pitched.
In his last outing on Saturday against the Dodgers, Gasser allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings, contributing to an 11-3 defeat. He initially held the Dodgers scoreless for three innings before they scored four runs in the fourth, including a three-run homer from Teoscar Hernández that shifted the game’s momentum.
Carlos Rodriguez’s Return
Rodriguez, 24, previously had a brief stint with the Brewers this season, posting a 0-0 record with a 2.25 ERA in two relief appearances. However, his performance in Nashville was less impressive, as he went 0-3 with an 8.03 ERA in five starts and three relief outings.
Manager’s Insights on Gasser’s Struggles
After the game on Saturday, Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed concerns that Gasser may have been tipping his pitches. He noted that Dodgers player Andy Pages appeared to be signaling from second base during Gasser’s time on the mound.
Murphy emphasized the importance of preventing opposing teams from deciphering signs, stating, “There’s a huge emphasis on making sure they can’t get your signs from second base. Pitchers have to be able to not give away anything.”
Gasser’s Reaction
In response to the game, Gasser acknowledged noticing Pages’ gestures but remained uncertain if it affected his performance. He commented, “It’s definitely something that’s come up before, and I thought I had a good grip on it and was covering it up. I don’t know. Maybe they had something. Maybe not.”
Dodgers Manager’s Perspective
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked about the potential tipping of pitches and remarked on the element of gamesmanship involved. He noted, “Whether you have them to disguise or act like you have them, (there’s) the gamesmanship part of it.” He suggested that the success of Hernández’s homer was more about the pitch quality than any signals from Pages.
Gasser’s Future
Currently, Gasser holds a record of 0-0 with a 3.74 ERA in six starts with Nashville. The Brewers will look to utilize Rodriguez’s skills as they navigate the remainder of the season.
