IND vs WI 1st Test, Day 1 Tea: Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja steer India after KL Rahul’s departure

New Delhi: India’s first session after lunch at the Narendra Modi Stadium saw a brief jolt as KL Rahul couldn’t build on his century after returning from lunch. The Indian opener, who had battled his way to 100, was caught at short extra-cover off Jomel Warrican’s delivery. Rahul had picked up width outside off and went for an expansive drive, only to hit it straight into Justin Greaves’ hands. While his hundred was well-earned, he’ll rue the missed opportunity to convert it into a bigger score.

However, vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja immediately got hold of the innings alongside Dhruv Jurel. He got his half-century just before the tea break. The duo together stitched a commanding partnership of 108 runs, further extending India’s lead. Jadeja was particularly aggressive and added to his tally with a towering six off Warrican over long-on, marking his 78th Test six and equalling MS Dhoni’s record. With India six wickets in hand, the pair look set to make the lead unassailable.

Jurel has shown composure beyond his experience, as in Pant’s absence, he has made the most of the opportunity. He scored a half-century and went on to complement Jadeja’s attacking intent, rotating strike effectively and punishing loose deliveries. Their partnership has not only consolidated India’s position but also ensured the hosts have plenty of momentum heading into the final session before stumps.
