Reached the flat on the pretext of paying rent

According to the police, the accused couple had reached the professor’s flat on the pretext of paying rent. There he once again pressurized him to sell the property. When the professor flatly refused, the duo allegedly murdered him inside the flat. After the murder, the accused locked the flat from outside and fled, so that the incident could be detected late.

How was the matter revealed?

The matter came to light when the professor’s sister Devarti Paul could not contact him. When she did not get any response despite repeated calls, she reached the flat in Vasundhara Enclave. There the flat was found locked from outside. On suspicion, the lock was broken, after which the body of Debsmita Paul was found inside. After this the police was immediately informed.

CCTV footage revealed the secret

During the investigation, the police investigated the activities of about 200 people coming and going in the residential complex. CCTV footage showed two masked people coming in a cab. Both of them did not use the lift and reached the flat via stairs. According to the footage, the two remained inside the building for about 30 minutes and then went back in the same vehicle. This clue later became the most important basis of investigation.

Not robbery, but planned murder

The forensic team and police investigation did not find any clear signs of forced entry or struggle inside the flat. This was the reason why investigators suspected from the beginning that the killers might have been acquaintances of the deceased. No valuables were stolen from the house, due to which the possibility of robbery was almost eliminated.

According to the police, Debasmita Paul last spoke to her mother around 1 pm on Wednesday. When the domestic help reached the flat at around 6 pm, the door did not open. Investigating agencies estimate that the murder took place between 1 pm and 6 pm.

Arrest made from West Bengal

Several teams of Delhi Police chased the accused on the basis of technical and physical evidence. Eventually the investigating officers conducted a raid in Bardhaman, West Bengal and arrested the husband and wife. A case of murder has been registered against both the accused under section 103(1) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).

Questions on increasing incidents of property disputes

This case once again shows how property disputes can escalate into serious crimes. Experts believe that there is a need for more vigilance regarding legal documents and security measures in matters related to tenancy and property. Delhi Police is now investigating every aspect of the case and trying to find out when and how the murder was planned.
