The one who went to save did not return.

Surat DCP Zone-1, Alok Kumar said that the incident occurred during routine cleaning of the tank in which the waste from jewelery cleaning is stored. He told that this morning four workers had gone to clean it. One worker fell into the tank and while trying to save him, the other three also fell inside, resulting in the death of all four.

How routine work became the cause of death

The police officer told ANI, “The jewelery cleaning waste goes into a septic tank. It is cleaned regularly to remove the accumulated sludge. This cleaning is done every two months. This morning, a team of four people had gone to clean. During this, a man fell into the tank and the other workers who went to save him also fell inside. There have been a total of four deaths. We are currently registering a case of accidental death.

Had this one thing been there, there would not have been 4 deaths.

  • The officer also said that the workers did not have any safety gear, which probably became a major reason for this accident. He said that prima facie the cause of death appears to be chemical poisoning, but the real cause will be clear only after the postmortem report comes.
  • Kumar said, “Initial analysis of the CCTV footage does not reveal any necessary safety equipment. Prima facie, chemical poisoning seems to be the cause because sudden death due to suffocation in such cases is often caused by chemical poisoning. But we cannot say anything for sure till the postmortem report of the doctor comes.
  • He further said, “This incident happened early in the morning… They did not have the necessary gear to handle and remove this sludge, hence this poisoning incident happened.
  • Divisional Fire Officer Ranjit Singh said that when he received the call, he got information that four people were trapped. He was taken out and sent to the hospital. Singh said that earlier it was thought to be a water tank, but there was poisonous gas there, due to the high quantity of which perhaps all four people became unconscious.
