According to the prevailing story, there was a looter on the Vindhya mountain at some time. He had done many wrong things like robbing, violence and adultery in his life. When the end of that robber came, the Yamdoot came to kill his life. The Yamdoot told him that tomorrow is your last day on earth. The looter was very scared to hear this. He understood that he will definitely get punishment for his bad deeds. Fearing this, he went to the sage Angira and told him the truth about his sinful deeds and asked him about liberation. Incidentally, that day was the Ekadashi date of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. Angira Rishi asked him to observe Papankusha Ekadashi fast. The robber observed the fast of Papankusha Ekadashi by law, due to which he got freedom from all his sinful deeds and after death he attained salvation.

Importance of Papankusha Ekadashi
In the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna himself has told Arjuna about Papankusha Ekadashi fast. According to him, the fruit of this Ekadashi fast is like Sahasra Ashwamedha and hundred Rajasuya Yajna. By observing this fast, a person gets everything healthy body, beautiful wife and wealth etc. A person who donates things on land, cow, grain, water, slippers, clothes, umbrellas etc. on this Ekadashi, he does not have a vision of Yama, that is, he does not go to hell after dying.
