The Tata Punch has ruled the micro SUV segment for years. It was even one of the best-selling SUVs in India a year ago. This is mainly due to very limited direct competition. But now, to take on its legacy, Maruti is planning to bring a new SUV to India. It will rival the Punch head-on and could replace the Ignis in its lineup. Here is everything we know so far. Maruti’s upcoming Tata Punch rival is codenamed Y34. While it is expected to replace the Ignis, we expect this new SUV to have a proper upright stance and higher ground clearance, rather than a quirky crossover look. It will be a sub-4m SUV, sitting below the Fronx in Maruti’s lineup, and could be sold via Nexa dealerships in India.
Features & Powertrain
When it comes to features, Maruti has generally lagged behind Hyundai and Tata. However, with its new SUV, we can expect a big jump here. This new SUV could get a large touchscreen infotainment (likely a 10.1-inch unit from Brezza), a semi-digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, a single-pane sunroof, six airbags standard, ADAS features, and more. While the model hasn’t been spotted yet, there aren’t any confirmed details as of now.
This Maruti SUV would likely be built on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, which underpins Maruti cars like the Dzire, Swift, Fronx, and Baleno. So, under the hood, we can expect a 1.2-litre, 3–cylinder NA petrol engine. It could also get a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine from the Fronx, retaining the same tuning. We also know Maruti is planning to introduce a series hybrid powertrain across its models, and this SUV could get that too. However, there is no confirmed information about it yet.
Launch & Expected Pricing
Maruti hasn’t officially confirmed the Y43, so all details are based on media reports. We expect it to launch in late 2027, though some reports point to the first half of 2028. To undercut the Punch, Maruti will have to price it aggressively. We expect it to be priced between Rs 6.5 lakh and Rs 11 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
