New Thar OG not only gets comprehensive updates, but also offers more choices in terms of variants and powertrain options
Mahindra has launched the in the price range of Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh. Thar OG has received 360-degree updates, including a new platform, improved off-road capabilities, a spruced-up cabin and better-performing engines. This is probably the best ICE version of the Thar before its next evolutionary phase brings hybrid and/or fully electric versions of the SUV.
Mahindra Thar OG – Off-road focused updates
Thar OG is built on a new platform, the M_Glyde 4G ladder-frame chassis. This is a shortened version of the platform used with the 5-door Thar Roxx. With this new platform, Thar OG has higher structural stiffness and torsional rigidity. This update can be useful across both on-road and off-road environments. Another key update is a new rear PENTALINK suspension setup with a Watts link.
Across on-road environments, this suspension aims to offer benefits such as improved cornering ability, reduced body roll and enhanced ride comfort. It is also suited for mixed use, offering off-road benefits such as improved articulation and traction, better axle control and enhanced durability. Mahindra has also introduced its DAVINCI damping tech with Thar OG, which is essentially a frequency-dependent damping (FDD) setup.
FDD aims to reduce body roll and improves on-road comfort, without compromising off-road capability. Thar OG has also received an electronic locking differential, which primarily improves traction. This feature is available exclusively with the 4WD variants of the new Thar OG. It replaces the earlier mechanical locking differential. 4WD variants also have terrain modes of Mud, Sand and Snow.
Performance boost
While the engine options have been retained, the 2.0-litre turbo petrol and the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engines now have higher output. Performance numbers of the entry-level 1.5-litre diesel engine remain unchanged. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine now generates 162 PS and 330 Nm. In comparison, the previous version generated 150 PS and 300 Nm (MT) / 320 Nm (AT).
Similarly, the 2.2-litre diesel now generates 152 PS, as compared to 132 PS earlier. Torque output is now 330 Nm, an improvement of 30 Nm. Transmission options of 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT remain unchanged for the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines with 4WD variants. RWD versions with these two engines get only the automatic option.
Exterior, cabin updates
New Thar OG has received a new five-slot grille, which enhances its retro appeal. This new grille also gets a side insert with THAR badging. Other updates include refreshed front and rear bumpers and a wider track. The SUV also gets new 19-inch alloy wheels with the higher variants and new LED fog lamps with a cornering function. Apart from these, most other features are the same as earlier.
Inside, new Thar OG has features like leatherette wrapped steering wheel, embossed leatherette seats and a soft armrest with a cupholder in the second row. Other updates include push-button start system, Type-C port for rear occupants, a wireless charging for front occupants, electric power steering and safety kit has been upgraded with 6 airbags and all four-wheel disc brakes.
With the new Thar OG, Mahindra has also increased the variant options. The base variant AXT is available with the 1.5-litre diesel in 2WD format. LXT trim has seven variants, with prices in the range of Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 17.99 lakh. Thar OG ZXT variants are available in the price range of Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh.
