Lancashire to honour ex-India wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer with stand at Old Trafford

New Delhi: Lancashire Cricket Club will honour India’s legendary wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer and West Indies legend Clive Lloyd by unveiling stands named after them at Old Trafford on the sidelines of the fourth Test between India and England in Manchester.

Both players will receive the honour for their successful contributions to Lancashire.

While Engineer played for Lancashire for close to a decade, ex-West Indies captain Lloyd stayed at the County club for two decades, leaving a lasting impact on the history of the club.

According to sources as quoted by PTI, the ceremony is likely to be held on Day 1 of the Test match that starts on July 23, Wednesday. England are 2-1 up in the five-match series after three absorbing games.

“It is a fitting honour for the both legends of the club,” said the source.

Fitting tribute to two Lancashire greats

Engineer, who played for Lancashire between 1968 and 1976, scored 5942 runs, took 429 catches and effected 35 stumpings for the iconic County club.

Engineer, 87, helped Lancashire end a 15-year title drought 15 years by playing an instrumental role in winning the Gillette Cup four times between 1970 and 1975.

Meanwhile, two-time World Cup-winning West Indies captain Lloyd revived the fortunes of the club after arriving as a foreign player in the early 1970s.

Both Engineer and Lloyd’s names will be forever etched in Lancashire history later this week. Mumbai-born Engineer, remarkably, doesn’t have a stand named after him at Brabourne Stadium, where he played most of his cricket.

“They were incredible times, and Old Trafford was a marvellous place to be. People would come for miles to see us play,” Engineer recalled his time at Lancashire during an interview with the club website a few years ago.

“From the Old Trafford dressing room we could see Warwick Road railway station and before the game we would see packed trains emptying the passengers on the platform. We could hear the chanting and the excited chatter and laughter,” he recalled.

Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar, who is in the UK on a personal visit, is also likely to attend the ceremony alongside the senior officials of the club.
