TB ie tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called mycobacterium tuberculosis. The most common form is lung TB. When an infected person has a lung TB, he leaves bacteria in the air while coughing, sneezing or talking. These bacteria can stay in the air for a long time and the people around take them through breath. In this way the infection spreads from one to another. Lung TB is mostly to those whose immunity is weak, such as malnutrition, long sick or HIV infected people. Initial symptoms include persistent cough, fever, night sweating and weight phenomenon. If not undergoing timely treatment, this disease can take serious form and can also infect others.
TB It is not limited to the lungs just. It can also spread to other organs of the body, which is called extrapulmonary TB. This includes TB of lymph nodes, TB of bones and joints, TB of kidneys, TB meningitis, intestinal TB and skin TB. The source of infection in such TB is the same bacteria, but they come out of the lungs through blood flow and reach other parts of the body. Symptoms in this type of TB vary according to that organ, such as swelling in lymph nodes, pain in bones, or swelling in the brain headache and confusion. Their treatment goes on long, but can be completely cured with regular medicines.
Can another TB also spread from one person to another?
Dr. Bhagwan Minister in Pulmonology Department at Moolchand Hospital in Delhi It is said that the lungs are usually contagious, as bacteria spread in the air through cough or sneezing, but TB in other parts of the body i.e. extraplmonary TB, does not infect others in general conditions. In lymph nodes, bones or kidney TB, bacteria do not come out in the outside air, so the risk of spreading its infection is very low.
But in certain special conditions, such as if a patient has a TB of the lungs as well as another TB, the infection can spread. Some forms of extrapalmonary TB such as direct contact in open wound TB may keep a slight risk of infection, but it is very rare. Medical procedures such as surgery or lab can have a risk of infection during work, so health workers have to take special care. Therefore, the TB of the lungs is primarily spreading disease, while other types usually do not spread.
