Maharashtra Shops Get 24-Hour Green Light, Alcohol Outlets Excluded

The Maharashtra government has announced that, with immediate effect, all shops and commercial establishments-except those dealing in alcohol-can operate 24 hours a day.

A circular issued by the Industries, Energy, Labour and Mining Department clarified the move, stating that most businesses in the state are now allowed to remain open around the clock. The only exceptions are permit rooms, beer bars, and wine shops, which continue to follow existing operating hours.

The move comes after the government received multiple complaints that local authorities and police were restricting businesses from operating round the clock.

Under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, businesses that opt to run 24/7 must ensure that every employee gets a mandatory weekly break of 24 consecutive hours.

Authorities have been notified to enforce the updated guidelines, clarifying that earlier restrictions on theatres and cinemas have now been lifted.

The decision is expected to give a boost to business activity and offer greater flexibility for establishments across the state.
