Skincare mistakes: Dermatologist talks about a common thing that can speed up ageing

New Delhi: Skincare might sound like a routine that is all about sunscreens, moisturisers, lotions, retinol and various vitamin C serums. Little do people realise that skincare can also begin with oral health. Yes, according to a UK doctor, there is a common mistake that most people make, which can speed up ageing. Turns out, brushing the teeth after engaging in a skincare routine can aggravate skincare problems in the long run. Find out how that works.

How does brushing the teeth after skincare ruin skin health?

According to experts, even toothpaste can take a negative toll on skin. Ideally, one must brush the teeth before putting any skincare products on the face. This way, dermatologists say, one can ruin the face, and it is because of the fluorides found in toothpaste. While they are good for teeth, they are bad for skin, especially for people who struggle with breakouts and red, flaky patches around the mouth. Experts say that the main culprit in this case is toothpaste residue that sits on the face after brushing. This can aggravate perioral dermatitis, a condition that is characterised by skin rashes and inflammation that circles the mouth.

What are the risks of brushing the teeth after skincare?’

People struggling with dry, scaly, and flaky skin, who are also struggling with swollen, inflamed bumps, must be particularly careful about this not happening. Some patients dealing with perioral dermatitis also complain of itching and burns. Furthermore, one can develop clear fluid-filled bumps, also known as vesicles or pustules. Although these are found around the mouth, they can also move to the eyelids or around the eyes and nose. In some cases, these may also show up around the ears, scalp, genitals, neck, and trunk.

Who is at risk of skin problems?

As per the Cleveland Clinic, women aged 25 to 45 years who use specific products are most prone to these skin problems. This could also be triggered by topical creams, moisturisers, face creams, steroid sprays, toothpaste and chewing gum. The solution in this case is to brush the teeth first and then wash the face followed by the proper skincare routine. The first sign for patients is rashes around the mouth. As soon as you spot these, it is advised to check with a doctor as a priority.
