. Indian opener Abhishek Sharma scored a stormy century against Afghanistan in the third T20 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday.
Abhishek smashed 108 runs off just 34 balls. The 26-year-old batsman believes that his tremendous form in the top order is a result of meticulous preparation according to the bowlers. He also stated that one or two poor series will not change the team’s aggressive batting style.
Abhishek completed his century in 30 balls on Thursday, setting the record for the fastest T20 half-century by an Indian batsman and the fastest century by a batsman from a ‘full member’ country. He was named ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’ in the 3-0 series win against Afghanistan, which included a significant victory by 127 runs. During the post-match presentation ceremony, Abhishek mentioned that everything depends on the process he adopts before each series.
He emphasized the importance of knowing who he is going to play against and which bowlers will be bowling. He stated that for him, the process has always been crucial as a batsman. He discussed how he plans to utilize the powerplay, who will bowl during it, and what will happen in the seventh or eighth over, noting that these aspects are very special to him.
Setting aside concerns about occasional losses or poor performances, Abhishek expressed that the team is united in its long-term goal of dominating opponents in all conditions. He remarked that they have been doing this for the past two years and that their identity as a batting unit will not be defined by one or two poor series, as they aim to maintain dominance throughout the year leading up to the World Cup, regardless of the opposition. He acknowledged that as a batsman and cricketer, fluctuations are part of the game, but the atmosphere in the team’s dressing room and their collective mindset matter.
He emphasized the importance of focusing on the next game and maintaining dominance. Crediting the clarity and freedom provided by the team management, Abhishek highlighted the significance of clear communication with team leadership to continue playing a high-risk game. He stated that when you want to play in a particular way, it is essential for the captain and coach to be on board, as trust from management, coaches, and the captain is necessary.
He believes that it is because of them that they have been able to do this for many years and hopes to continue doing so. Regarding his ability to score runs in every corner of the field, Abhishek mentioned that he does not think he should be limited to any specific area. He advised to just watch the ball and play accordingly.
He noted that it has been easy for him since day one, as he wants to play openly without forcing shots. He aims to play shots based on the ball and believes this will remain an easy approach for him in upcoming matches, although one cannot always guarantee good performance. He concluded by stating that the culture being built in their team requires them to dominate and take advantage of the powerplay, which is why everything is going well.
