New Delhi: West Indies will lock horns with Australia in a five-match T20I series, starting Monday, July 21. The first T20I will be played at the Sabina Park, Kingston, in Jamaica. West Indies will be looking to brush aside the disappointment from their 0-3 whitewash against Australia in the recently concluded Test series and kick off the T20I series with a win.
West Indies suffered a crushing 176-run defeat in the third and final Test against Australia at the Sabina Park after getting bowled out for just 27 runs in their second innings, the second-lowest total by any team in Test history. However, the hosts will be confident of a strong show in the T20I series, with a strong squad at their disposal.
Shai Hope will continue to lead West Indies in T20I series, with the likes of Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Evin Lewis, and star all-rounder Andre Russell bringing in significant experience to the squad. The series against Australia will mark the end of Russell’s international career as the all-rounder will retire after the first two T20Is.
West Indies have also handed maiden call-ups to youngsters Jewel Andrew and Jediah Blades for the Australia series. Blades, a left-arm seamer, made his ODI debut against Bangladesh last year, while Andrew is a talented wicket-keeper batter who has played three ODIs for West Indies and has 203 runs in 10 T20s.
On the other hand, Australia have recalled explosive opener Jake Fraser McGurk to their squad after Spencer Johnson was ruled out of the series due to back soreness. Matt Short will also miss the series with a side strain. Mitchell Marsh will lead the visitors in the West Indies series.
