Odisha Horror: 15-year-old girl set on fire, condition critical with 70% burns

New Delhi: A 15-year-old girl is battling for her life after a brutal assault in Puri district, Odisha. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the state, occurred around 9 PM near the Bhargavi River in Bayabur village, which falls under the Balanga police station area. According to initial investigations, three unidentified men on a motorcycle accosted the girl as she was walking to a friend’s house. They forcibly dragged her to the riverbank, where they poured an inflammable substance over her and set her ablaze.

The victim, who suffered approximately 75% burns, was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. While her condition remains critical, medical reports indicate she is conscious and able to communicate. The attack has triggered widespread condemnation and anger. The incident occurred about 1.5 kilometres from her home in Nuagopalpur Basti and 5-7 kilometres from the nearest police station, raising questions about response times and security in the area.

The attack has also ignited a political firestorm. Protests are ongoing outside AIIMS Bhubaneswar, with members of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress (INC) staging demonstrations demanding swift justice and accountability from the government. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has reportedly condemned the incident, adding further pressure for a thorough investigation.

The police are currently pursuing multiple leads, though the perpetrators remain at large. The incident underscores concerns about the safety of women and minors in the region, prompting calls for increased security measures and stricter penalties for such heinous crimes.
