CMG Stock Ticks Up On AI Food Safety Bet With Palantir: Retail Bullish On ‘Ontological Burritos’

Chipotle is adding AI-driven analytics to food safety as outbreaks, supply chain risks pressure industry.

  • Chipotle is partnering with Palantir to use its Foundry platform to analyze restaurant data.
  • The initiative will help identify potential food safety risks by monitoring inspections, pest incidents and employee illnesses.
  • U.S. food safety concerns have intensified, with more than 12,800 outbreak-related illnesses reported this year.

Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) stock is drawing attention as the company is testing a new food safety platform developed with Palantir Technologies (PLTR), using data on health inspections, pest incidents and employee illnesses to identify potential risks across restaurants. The move comes as foodborne illness outbreaks have raised fresh concerns about restaurant safety nationwide.

Chipotle Turns To Data To Monitor Food Safety

According to a WIRED report, Chipotle is turning to data analytics to strengthen food safety across its restaurant network, teaming up with Palantir on a system designed to identify locations that may require closer attention.

The initiative uses Palantir’s Foundry software to bring together information such as inspection results, pest-related incidents and employee illness reports, then assess potential risks at individual restaurants.

Chipotle Mexican Grill stock ticked 0.4% higher overnight Wednesday. However, the stock is headed for a third straight week of loss with nearly a 7% fall.

Chipotle’s Supply Chain Safety Test

The project arrives after a difficult stretch for food safety in the U.S., with the Food and Drug Administration reporting more than 12,800 illnesses associated with foodborne outbreaks this year.

A major Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce accounted for much of that total. Taco Bell became the public face of the outbreak after the FDA linked the illnesses to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, which recalled products distributed to 27 states. Taco Bell removed the affected lettuce from its restaurants.

Chipotle did not face that outbreak because the chain does not use iceberg lettuce. The company did take action in July, removing jalapeños supplied by a vendor connected to a Salmonella outbreak that ultimately sickened more than 430 people, reviving concerns from its past outbreaks between 2015 and 2018 involving E. coli, norovirus, and Salmonella.

Also, the U.S. restaurant industry itself is facing tough times as traffic is under pressure, with visits to dining chains falling 2.4% year over year in August. Restaurant prices rose 3.4%, while grocery prices increased 2.2%. Gas prices also jumped more than 27%, which could lead consumers to spend less on dining out.

What CMG Retail Traders Are Saying

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the stock remains in ‘bullish’ territory. The stock saw an 816% jump in message volume over the past week.

A user said, “While the AI doomers scream about safety, Palantir is actually building platforms to keep people safe. Bullish ontological burritos.”

Another user said, “Chipotle getting into the AI game.”

CMG stock has declined nearly 9% year to date.
