The wife of a senior IPS officer died in an attack by a wild elephant in Kodagu district of Karnataka. Sandhya Achaiya, 51, had gone to look after work in her coffee plantation when the elephant attacked her.
Kodagu: A sad news has come out from Karnataka. Sandhya Achaiya (51), wife of senior IPS officer Sunil Achaiya, died in an attack by a wild elephant here in Kodagu district. The incident took place in a coffee plantation in Thithimathi area on Friday.
According to reports, Sandhya had come to see the work going on in the garden after attending a function at her relative’s house. There were four more people with him. Meanwhile, a wild elephant suddenly ran towards them. Seeing the elephant, the rest somehow escaped by running away, but Sandhya got caught by it.
Sandhya was seriously injured in the elephant attack. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but the doctors could not save his life. On this incident, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar has expressed grief. He said, “This is a heart-wrenching incident and I am deeply saddened by it. I join the family in their grief and pray to God to give them the strength to bear this loss.”
This coffee plantation is near Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a common thing for wild elephants to enter residential areas in this area. Local people have raised the demand for making arrangements like fencing to stop elephants. Sandhya’s husband Sunil Achaiya is a DGP rank officer in Delhi. He is a 1991 batch IPS officer of Nagaland cadre.
