As soon as Sonam fell to the ground without warning, her husband and relatives thought it was a part of her performance, but she remained motionless for a while, and that is when she was rushed to the hospital.

Heart attacks can appear irrespective of age

According to doctors, heart attacks can happen to anyone, regardless of age. At times, any kind of physical activity can trigger cardiac issues in those with unknown and undiagnosed heart conditions. Experts say sudden cardiac death is the swift and expected ending of all heart activity. Breathing and blood flow stop right away. Within seconds, the person is not conscious and dies. The condition happens when there is a sudden loss of heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm. Survival is possible with fast, proper medical care.

Heart conditions that are not diagnosed, like genetic heart disease, can lead to sudden death in teenagers and young adults. A heart condition that is not identified may cause a young person to suddenly die during physical activity, such as competitive sports. But sudden cardiac death can occur without activity.

Why are youngsters experiencing heart attacks?

Doctors say there has been a rise in the number of young people experiencing heart attacks due to lifestyle issues, which include unhealthy diets, sedentary behaviour, high stress, smoking, and increased substance abuse, along with genetic predispositions like inherited high cholesterol or undiagnosed congenital heart conditions.

Along with these, experts also attribute the rise in conditions like diabetes and obesity at younger ages, which significantly contribute to this growing problem. A few lifestyle factors include:

Unhealthy diet

Diets packed with processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats contribute to the buildup of plaque in your arteries and increase the risk of a heart attack.

Sedentary lifestyle

A lack of regular physical activity, along with prolonged sitting, spikes the risk of obesity and other heart-related issues.

Stress

Chronic stress activates your body’s stress response, leading to elevated blood pressure and inflammation.

Smoking

Smoking traditional cigarettes or vaping can increase heart rate and blood pressure, raising the risk of heart problems.

Genetics

Genetic factors, such as inherited high cholesterol or heart muscle conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, significantly increase the risk.

Undiagnosed conditions

There are many congenital heart defects, like heart valve abnormalities and arrhythmias, that can go unnoticed in young adults, leaving them vulnerable.

Obesity

Obesity or being overweight can lead to diabetes – especially among younger adults – putting extra strain on the heart and damaging blood vessels, significantly increasing a person’s risk of a sudden heart attack.
