Janhvi Kapoor In Peddi Movie: Has proper justice been done to the character of Janhvi Kapoor in the film Peddi? Is it okay to romanticize non-consensual scenes? Should ignoring an artist’s objections in post-production be considered a violation of creativity rights?
‘Peddi’ is once again in the headlines after the movie release. This time the movie is not about the story, but about the role of Jhanvi Kapoor. There is sharp criticism regarding his role. The way his character “Achiyamma” has been portrayed in the film has made a large section of the audience uncomfortable.
The ongoing debate on social media regarding the film intensified when an Instagram page “Recommendation Community” shared a detailed post on it. The title of the post was, ‘Peddi: the most expensive disrespect ever paid to a leading woman in Indian cinema.’
Question on character’s role
The post alleged that the female characters did not get equal treatment in the film, which had a budget of around ₹350 crore. It was claimed that while the film’s male protagonist was shown in socio-political conflict, Jhanvi Kapoor’s character was limited to mere “objectification” and camera focus. The post also said that there are scenes in the film in which Achiamma’s consent was ignored, especially a scene where the male character kisses her without permission. Because of this, many viewers have accused the film of ‘romanticizing the relationship’.
Debate on Jhanvi Kapoor’s role
Regarding Jhanvi Kapoor, it is being said that she had objected to some shots during post-production, but those scenes were included in the final edit. However, official confirmation of these claims has not been revealed yet. The Instagram post also said that the issue was not about the actress’s failure but about ‘creative control and consent’ where the actress’s boundaries were allegedly ignored.
