The idea of at-home tasks goes way back to the Roman Empire. An educator named Quintilian gave work for home to boost memory. But the modern version has a different story. An Italian teacher, Roberto Nevilis, apparently invented it in 1905. He used it as a punishment to keep naughty students busy with books even after school! Later, people like American educator Horace Mann helped make it a normal part of learning, not a punishment.
