Premalatha Vijayakanth backs Amit Shah’s call for coalition govt in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth has welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s suggestion of a coalition government in Tamil Nadu, stating that such an arrangement would be beneficial for the state. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore airport, she emphasized that coalition governments have been successfully implemented in other states and that Tamil Nadu could follow suit.

“A coalition government in Tamil Nadu is welcome. Today, such governments are functioning effectively in many states. There is no need for a single party to hold absolute power. It would be good if a coalition government is formed here as well, under the leadership of a state party within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA),” Premalatha said. Her remarks come amid ongoing discussions within the NDA bloc over the political strategy for the 2026 Assembly elections.

Political Heat Rises as Alliances Take Shape Ahead of 2026 Polls

With just 10 months remaining before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, political activity in the state has intensified. While the ruling DMK-led alliance appears strong, the BJP has recently joined forces with the AIADMK in an attempt to consolidate opposition strength. However, the alliance has been marred by confusion over key issues, including the chief ministerial candidate and the nature of the government—whether it will be a coalition or an AIADMK-led administration.

Amit Shah’s recent statement advocating a coalition government with the AIADMK as the CM candidate has further fuelled debates, particularly since he did not explicitly name AIADMK chief Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) for the role. While EPS has insisted that an AIADMK government would lead the state, BJP leaders, including Shah, have repeatedly referred to a coalition setup. This divergence in views has created uncertainty within the alliance.

DMDK’s Stand on Alliances and Internal Clarifications

When questioned about the DMDK’s stance on potential alliances, Premalatha Vijayakanth reiterated that her party supports a coalition model but will finalize its position closer to the elections. “We will announce our alliance strategy in January 2026,” she said. She also addressed speculation surrounding DMDK treasurer Sathish’s participation in a recent Congress event, clarifying that his attendance was purely personal and not linked to the party’s political alignments.

“Sathish attended the event as a friend, not as a representative of the DMDK. His presence has no connection to our alliance decisions,” she stated.
