Petroleum Ministry told the inside story

  • “As far as under-recovery (loss) on domestic LPG cylinder is concerned, it is still around Rs 700,” Petroleum Ministry Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma, while replying to media queries at a press conference on Thursday, said.
  • Sharma also informed about the steps taken to reduce the gap between demand and supply of LPG. He said that along with increasing domestic production, arrangements have also been made to import gas.
  • He said, “Apart from imports, the most important step that has been taken is to increase the production of LPG in the country. If I give you yesterday’s data, about 54 TMT (thousand metric tons) of LPG was produced from different sources in the country.”
  • According to Sujata Sharma, the demand for LPG has decreased in recent times. There are many reasons for this, such as low usage by commercial and industrial users, better booking cycle (25 days and 45 days) and delivery authentication with the help of technology.

Commercial and industrial LPG consumption decreased

“The demand has come down because our commercial and industrial LPG consumption has come down… the second reason is the booking period which we have managed, and the third reason is the DAC (delivery authentication code) linked deliveries,” said Sujata Sharma.

How much is the stock of petrol and gas in the country?

  • The ministry also clarified that despite the ongoing tension in West Asia, there has been no impact on the supply of crude oil, LPG and natural gas. There is sufficient stock of petrol, diesel and LPG in the country. Our refineries are also working at full capacity.”
  • He also said that the use of digital system in LPG distribution has also increased. He said, “There is no shortage of cylinders reported anywhere at the LPG distributorship. About 99% of the bookings are now being done online and 96% of the deliveries are being done through delivery authentication code.”
  • According to the ministry, 1.5 crore cylinders were booked in the last three days, out of which 1.43 crore cylinders were delivered.
