Chinese man swallows spoon; mistakes it for a drunken dream for months

Beijing: A Chinese man was taken aback when he realised he was living with a spoon in his stomach for six months. The incident came to light after a stomach issue caused him to visit the hospital. The 29-year-old, who spent a boozy holiday in Thailand, believed he had only dreamt of swallowing a spoon. However, in reality, a 15cm-long coffee spoon was lodged inside his intestine.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the man identified as Yan had completely ignored the incident. But months after his Thailand adventures, Yan went to Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai with discomfort in his stomach. He thought he had swallowed plastic while eating some takeaway food. Doctors examined him and, to their surprise, they found a ceramic coffee spoon in his small intestine.

The experts conducting the endoscopy were stunned as the spoon was precariously wedged in the upper part of his small intestine. They claimed that any sudden movement could potentially cause inflammation or bleeding. They were also shocked by how the spoon had not resulted in any severe problems in the man’s body.

Soon after the discovery of the spoon, Yan recollected what had truly happened in Thailand. He remembered he was inebriated in his room, trying to induce vomiting with the help of a spoon. He said that the spoon had disappeared, but he wasn’t bothered at the time due to his intoxication.

The next day, he thought it was just a drunken dream.

So after the spoon, he resumed his daily routine in Shanghai.

Dr Zhou Hongping, head of the hospital’s endoscopy centre, carried out the tough job of getting the spoon out of Yan’s body. The procedure lasted for 90 minutes and was successfully completed with the help of two different forceps.

Finally, after the procedure, Hongping was discharged. He expressed happiness and relief following the extraction.
