India head into their Women’s T20 Asia Cup clash against Pakistan as overwhelming favourites, with the gulf between the two sides evident across both recent form and squad strength.
Having already secured a place in the semi-finals, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side will look to maintain their momentum when the arch-rivals meet in Dubai on Saturday.
The rivalry will inevitably bring its own intensity, but on current evidence, India start well ahead. Pakistan have struggled for consistency with the bat, while India’s top order is beginning to find its rhythm at the right time.
Why India are favourites against Pakistan
India have already secured their place in the last four and remain the strongest side in the tournament on paper. Their campaign has also been boosted by the form of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma at the top of the order.
Mandhana was particularly impressive against Hong Kong, smashing a record-breaking century that underlined her growing influence in the tournament. She and Shafali also showed good awareness of the conditions, taking time to assess the surface before accelerating.
The Dubai pitches have not been straightforward for batting, with players generally needing around 10 deliveries to understand the pace and bounce before committing to their shots. India’s ability to adapt should give them another advantage against Pakistan.
There is still room for improvement, however. Pratika Rawal, Richa Ghosh and Harmanpreet have all had starts without converting them into substantial scores. Rawal, in particular, remains under pressure after struggling to reproduce her ODI success in the T20 format.
India’s bowling has also received a boost from Nandni Sharma, who has impressed since coming into the attack and has formed a promising new-ball combination with Kranti Gaud. With Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav and the other established options adding depth, India have greater variety across departments.
Pakistan’s batting remains their biggest concern
Pakistan’s route to an upset will likely depend on whether their batting can withstand India’s attack.
Their shortcomings with the bat have been a recurring problem, and even against Thailand in their previous game, they lost three wickets during the powerplay before recovering to post a modest 119. They ultimately defended that total, but India represent a significantly tougher challenge.
Pakistan continue to rely heavily on opener Muneeba Ali and captain Fatima Sana, who contributes with both bat and ball. If either player is dismissed early, Pakistan could find themselves under considerable pressure.
Their bowling attack does give them a chance of making the contest competitive, particularly if they can exploit the conditions and strike early. But they will need a much more complete performance than they produced against Thailand.
Who will win India vs Pakistan?
India are the clear favourites.
Their superior batting depth, greater bowling variety and the current form of Mandhana and Shafali make them the more rounded side. Pakistan can make a contest of it if their bowlers strike early and their top order survives India’s new-ball attack, but the onus is firmly on them to produce a performance above their recent level.
India, meanwhile, have already qualified for the semi-finals and can use this fixture to sharpen the areas that remain unfinished ahead of the knockout stage.
