In small villages located on the Bihar-UP border, when people were drinking morning tea and preparing to start work in the fields, Manish used to dismiss people’s lips on hearing the name of Kushwaha. A name that traders, laborers and common people used to tremble with fear on hearing. Manish, who was once the son of a common farmer in Niranjana village of Vishambharpur police station area of Gopalganj, gradually became one of the most notorious gangsters of UP-Bihar.
Farmer’s son and path of crime
Manish Kushwaha’s childhood was spent like normal children. It was his routine to share the fields, help the family and study. But his life’s vision changed in adolescence. Instead of studying and writing, he started having fun in small battles and quarrels. Gradually this series reached extortion and crime.
In the 2000s, Manish’s name started making headlines in Ara and Bhojpur areas of Bihar. He started threatening the traders and established a business of extortion. After contact with local groups, he formed his gang, later known as ‘Kushwaha Gang’.

Manish Kushwaha registered a name in more than 26 criminal cases. From murder to robbery, kidnapping, attack on police and bomb blasts, the crime list lodged against him was creepy.
In 2010, the ruthless killing of a businessman in Ghazipur gave a message of his becoming dangerous. In Bihar, he threw a grenade to take extortion from the hospital owner and fired from AK-47. According to the local people, rumors such as cutting the heads of the opponents and spreading them in the area were also echoed.

The hostility of Pandey and Kushwaha groups, which had been in the 1990s, gave Manish a chance to shine. He made his name standing against the bullies like Lalan Pandey. Merchant threatening letter, ‘H’ card and lion symbol became his trademark.
In Ara Town, he raised crores by running an extortion racket. He did not stop even by targeting women and children. His gang carried out more than 200 criminal incidents. This led to a profound impact on the economy and general public of the area.

Manish’s infamous had increased so much that Bihar and UP police started conducting many big operations for raids behind him. In 2015, Manish hidden in Delhi was caught by Special Cell. Bihar Police highlighted its colleagues and networks. He encountered the police several times, injured in an encounter in 2020 but escaped. After this, the joint action of UP STF and Bihar Police eventually broke the network of his gang.
The then SP Swarn Prabhat included Manish in the list of top-100 criminals. The house was demolished by the bulldozer by attaching his house. Despite this, Manish remained absconding for many years.
