Zubeen Garg’s death: Lawyers refuse to represent accused

New Delhi: The All Assam Lawyers’ Association has taken a strong stand regarding the mysterious death of the popular singer Zubeen Garg. The association has publicly urged all lawyers in Assam not to represent anyone accused in connection with the case. This decision was made out of moral and social responsibility, reflecting the deep respect and sorrow felt across Assam after Garg’s sudden death while swimming in Singapore on September 19.

Assam Lawyers Association’s statement

The association described Zubeen Garg as the “heartbeat of Assamese identity” and a cultural icon. They emphasised the case’s sensitive nature and the emotional impact it has on the people of Assam. Many FIRs have been filed against individuals, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sarma (Garg’s manager), and others linked to the incident. The Assam Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly probe the matter.

In a statement, the association stated, “The death under mysterious circumstances has given rise to suspicion, mystery and a sense of conspiracy. Multiple FIRs have been lodged with the police in different parts of the State. Allowing their conscience to defend the accused will be a historical mistake for the legal fraternity.”

By refusing to defend the accused, the lawyers’ association wants to ensure justice is served and that the accused do not get anticipatory bail or other legal protections easily. They believe this united stance will help preserve public trust and uphold Assamese cultural dignity. The appeal was signed by senior leaders of the association and is being circulated throughout the state to all lawyers.
