Who was the charioteer of Lord Ram: There are many such war stories in Ramayana and Mahabharata which astonish us. We all are aware of the great war of Mahabharata, where Lord Shri Krishna himself became the charioteer of Arjuna to establish religion in the field of Kurukshetra and gave him the knowledge of Geeta. But have you ever wondered that when Lord Shri Ram was fighting the last and fierce battle with Lankapati Ravana in Tretayuga, who took command of his chariot? According to Valmiki Ramayana, at that time Matali, the charioteer of Devraj Indra, became the charioteer of Shri Ram.

Matali, the charioteer of Devraj Indra, became the charioteer of Shri Ram.

According to Valmiki Ramayana, in the last phase of the Lankan war, when Ravana reached the battlefield riding on his grand and powerful chariot, Lord Shri Ram was facing him on foot. When the gods saw all this, they were worried that Shri Ram should get equal opportunity in front of Ravana riding the chariot. Then Devraj Indra sent his divine chariot to help Lord Rama. Along with this chariot, he also sent his charioteer Matali, who used to drive Indra’s chariot in heaven. After which Matali drove the chariot during the entire war of Ramayana.

Who was Matali?

Matali is considered a skilled and intelligent charioteer among the gods. He was counted among the most trusted servants of Devraj Indra. According to mythology, he had a deep understanding of military tactics, chariot operations and battlefield conditions. For this reason Indra chose him to help Shri Ram.

Played an important role in the last war

The last war between Ravana and Shri Ram was very fierce. Divine weapons were being used from both sides. In such difficult times, Matali skillfully operated Shri Ram’s chariot and provided him the right opportunities by understanding the direction of the war. It is described in Ramayana that when the war started getting prolonged, Matali also advised Lord Rama to use a decisive weapon to destroy Ravana. After this, Shri Ram killed Ravana with the influence of Brahmastra and religion won.

What was the difference between Lord Krishna and Matali?

In Mahabharata, Lord Shri Krishna himself became the charioteer of Arjuna and he not only drove the chariot but also gave Arjuna the divine knowledge of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Whereas in Ramayana, Matali became the charioteer of Lord Rama, who was specially sent by Devraj Indra to help in the war. Both these things show that God’s help was received in different forms for the establishment of religion. While on one hand Lord Krishna himself became the charioteer, on the other hand the gods sent their best charioteer Matali to help Lord Rama.
