Speed Post gets cheaper and smarter as India Post adds discounts and OTP delivery system

New Delhi: The Department of Posts has announced revised tariffs and a host of new features for Inland Speed Post (Documents) that are set to be effective from October 1, 2025. The latest move is the first that marks tariff revision since October 2012 and is aimed at addressing rising operational costs while integrating technology-driven solutions for greater customer convenience.

India Post has launched its post office service modernisation scheme Speed Post in 1986 and since then it has been a reliable and affordable alternative to private courier services. The latest reforms are aimed at enhancing security, transparency, and user experience.

Key Features Introduced

  • Registration Service: Delivery only to the addressee or authorized representative at a charge of Rs 5 plus GST.
  • OTP-Based Delivery: Verification-led delivery at Rs 5 per item plus GST.
  • Discounts: 10 percent for students and 5 percent for new bulk customers.
  • Digital Enhancements: SMS notifications, real-time delivery updates, and online booking facilities.

Revised Tariffs

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, in a social media post, highlighted the reforms as steps to make Speed Post “more secure, transparent, and technology-based,” reinforcing India Post’s competitive edge in the logistics sector.

For documents up to 50 grams, the new tariff is Rs 19 for local deliveries and Rs 47 for longer distances. Parcels weighing 51–250 grams will range from Rs 24 (local) to Rs 77 (above 1,000 km). For items between 251 and 500 grams, charges range from Rs 28 (local) to Rs 93 (above 2,000 km).
