Tata Motors appoints Shailesh Chandra as MD & CEO; Dhiman Gupta new CFO

New Delhi: In a significant leadership shuffle ahead of their planned demerger, Tata Motors have announced appointments in key roles, including Shailesh Chandra as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, who will assume his new role from October 1st, 2025. This move comes as the auto giant prepares to formally split its commercial and passenger vehicle businesses into separate entities.

According to the company’s regulatory filing, Chandra’s appointment will see a term of three years, ending on September 30, 2028. At present serving as the head of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, Chandra will continue with that responsibility while assuming his new role. He will also join the Tata Motors Board as an Additional Director and be designated as a Key Managerial Personnel.

Girish Wagh to Lead Commercial Vehicle Division

In a similar scenario, Girish Wagh has been appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicles division, also effective from October 1, 2025. The reshuffle is part of the company’s broader strategy following the approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to separate their passenger and commercial vehicle segments into independent entities.

Outgoing CEO Guenter Karl Butschek is expected to support the transition and will later assume responsibilities within the commercial vehicle side of the business post-demerger.

Further strengthening their leadership team, Tata Motors have named Dhiman Gupta as its new Chief Financial Officer. He will officially take over the role from November 17, 2025, succeeding PB Balaji, who will step down as Group CFO on the same date. Balaji though, will continue to be associated with the company in a strategic capacity, transitioning to a role as Non-Independent Director on the Board and assuming a leadership position at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

The management reshuffle comes at a critical juncture for Tata Motors as it gears up for the structural separation of their businesses and operations. The demerger is aimed at unlocking greater value, enhancing operational focus, and accelerating growth in both the passenger and commercial vehicle segments.
