The Supreme Court has imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the Uttarakhand State Election Commission for double entry in the voter list. Along with this, the order of the High Court has upheld. The High Court had canceled the circular of the State Election Commission.
Supreme Court: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the petition filed by the Uttarakhand State Election Commission (SEC). The order of Uttarakhand High Court was challenged in this. The High Court had canceled the commission’s circular in which candidates were allowed to contest panchayat elections when several voter list was named.
The Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s decision. Along with this, a fine of Rs 2 lakh was also imposed on Uttarakhand Election Commission. The Uttarakhand High Court had earlier ruled that the explanation of the State Election Commission is against the Uttarakhand Panchayati Raj Act, 2016. It has been clearly stated in this law that a person cannot be enrolled as voters in more than one place at the same time.
Supreme Court told the State Election Commission- how to decide against the law
Even after this, the order of the State Election Commission allowed such candidates to contest elections. Due to this, he faced a legal challenge. The High Court ruled against the Election Commission. The Election Commission challenged it in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court reprimanded the state election body and said, “How can you take a decision contrary to the statutory provision?”
After the decision of the Supreme Court, Congress said sharp attack
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the Congress launched a scathing attack on the BJP and the Election Commission. In a post on X, the Congress said that the Supreme Court has exposed “vote theft”. The party alleged that the Election Commission is working closely with the BJP. The Congress accused the BJP of transferring voters from villages to cities during the first municipal elections and then including them back to the village list before the panchayat elections. According to the Congress, when this strategy was opposed, the BJP registered renewed in many places. This made them eligible to vote in more than one constituencies.

The Congress alleged that the State Election Commission “refused to take action”, despite repeated complaints about the six-month residence rules to register the name in the voter list. Such candidates were allowed to contest elections.
