New Delhi: Police reportedly arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday, a day after Centre cancelled the FCRA licence of Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) founded by him.
Wangchuk also did not attend the press conference that was scheduled to take place at 2.30pm on Friday.
Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed in Ladakh as police and paramilitary forces enforced a curfew in Leh town, a day after protests for statehood turned violent leaving four people dead and 90 others injured.
Why people are protesting in Leh?
Around 50 people have been taken into custody in connection with the violence that broke out on Wednesday during the shutdown called by Leh Apex Body (LAB) to demand an extension of the Sixth Schedule and statehood for Ladakh.
The escalation of violence had led climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to abandon his fortnight-long hunger strike. He has denounced the violence.
