Star KKR all-rounder to announce shock retirement from international cricket: Reports

Star West Indies cricketer and one of the veterans of the game, Andre Russell is all set to retire from international cricket. However, neither of nor the Windies all-rounder has shared an update on the same, but the reports reveal that Russell will bid adieu to international cricket after the first two T20Is against Australia.

It is to be noted that Australia is touring West Indies for a multi-format series. While the two nations recently locked horns in a three-match Test series, which saw the hosts go down by 0-3 margin, they will now play Australia in a five-match T20I series, starting from Sunday, July 20. While the first two T20Is are set to be played at the Sabina Park, the series will then move to St Kitts where the remaining three matches will be played on July 25, 26 and 28 respectively.

Andre Russell to retire from international cricket after first two T20Is vs AUS: Reports

If reports are to be believed, the retirement will come after the first two matches, which will be played at his home ground in Sabina Park, Jamaica. According to a Jamaica Observer report, the Jamaican all-rounder will announce his international retirement in the coming days. The report also adds that the 37-year-old will not travel for the remaining three matches to St Kitts.

Russell had intended on playing the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, but it is now believed that he is solely focused on franchise cricket. Earlier during the IPL 2025, there were reports of Russell putting down curtains to his IPL career, but his teammate, Varun Chakravarthy refuted them as he stated, ‘As far as I’ve spoken to him and interacted with him, he still wants to play another two or three cycles of the IPL – which is easily six more years. He looks fine and fit. It doesn’t matter how old you are, as long as you’re contributing to the team. That’s the mindset. In franchise cricket, no one’s going to question that.’

Russell has been a crucial player in Windies squad through the years. His blazing performance at the T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016, helped the Men in Maroon to clinch a title. The 37-year-old has so far played 140 matches across the white-ball formats, scoring 1034 runs in ODIs and 1078 in T20Is.
