Francesco Bagnaia produced exactly the response he needed at MotorLand, topping the first phase of qualifying for the of Aragón to fight his way into Q2. After the frustration of missing out on automatic qualification through the combined practice session, the two-time world champion delivered when it mattered, setting the fastest time in Q1 to secure his passage into the pole shootout alongside the ten riders who had already qualified directly.
Bagnaia was the class of the session, stopping the clocks with a 1:45.820 to lead the way and rescue his qualifying campaign. It was a timely reminder of the champion’s quality, and a welcome boost for the Italian after a run of weekends that has seen him forced into the Q1 scramble more often than a rider of his calibre would like.
Joining him in the promotion to Q2 is Diogo Moreira, who delivered an outstanding lap to finish second in the session for Pro Honda LCR with a 1:45.841 – just 0.021 seconds adrift of Bagnaia. It is a superb result for the young Brazilian, who continues to impress in his rookie campaign and now earns himself a shot at a strong grid position among the front-runners.
The disappointment was reserved for those who fell short. Jack Miller was third for Prima Pramac Yamaha with a 1:45.959, missing out on progression by the narrowest of margins, with Brad Binder fourth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and Joan Mir fifth for Honda HRC. Enea Bastianini was sixth, Luca Marini seventh, Alex Rins eighth, Pol Espargaró ninth, Toprak Razgatlioglu tenth, Fabio Quartararo eleventh, and Lorenzo Savadori twelfth on the Trackhouse Aprilia, deputising for the injured Ai Ogura. All of them saw their qualifying end in Q1.
Conditions were clear and warm for the session, with an air temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and the track surface at 36 degrees under 38 percent humidity.
Bagnaia and Moreira now advance to join the ten riders who secured direct Q2 passage through the combined practice session – a group headed by the resurgent Marco Bezzecchi, who has topped every session at Aragón so far, alongside Marc Marquez, Alex Márquez, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Fermín Aldeguer, Raul Fernández, leader Jorge Martín, Pedro Acosta, Franco Morbidelli, and Johann Zarco.
The context adds weight to every session, with the standings tightening as the season progresses. Jorge Martín leads on 240 points, with Marco Bezzecchi second on 209 and the injured Ai Ogura third on 203 – the Japanese rider’s absence this weekend offering his rivals a chance to close the gap or extend their advantage.
