Mumbai: In Hinduism, menstruating women are traditionally advised to refrain from participating in puja rituals or fasting. This often leads to confusion—especially during the spiritually significant Sawan season, when many women observe the 16 Somwar Vrat (a 16-week Monday fast dedicated to Lord Shiva). A common question arises: What should a woman do if she gets her period during these vrat days? Should she restart the entire vow or extend the fast for one more Monday?
The 16 Somwar Vrat is a sankalp—a sacred commitment—and according to religious belief, breaking it isn’t necessary even if one is menstruating. Instead, there are alternate ways to honour the vrat while maintaining both spiritual integrity and physical boundaries.
You don’t need to break the vrat
The 16 Somwar fast is based on one’s devotion and intent. If a woman gets her period during these days, she is not required to break the fast. The vrat can still be completed without interruption, so long as spiritual intent is preserved.
Continue the fast, skip ritual worship
During menstruation, while temple visits or physical rituals are discouraged, you can still continue your fast. Devotees are advised to chant Lord Shiva’s mantras and maintain a meditative state. Once the menstrual cycle ends and shuddhi (ritual purity) is restored, one may resume full puja procedures.
Ask another woman to perform the puja
If you are unable to conduct your own puja due to your period, tradition allows you to have another woman perform the worship on your behalf. This ensures the spirit of devotion continues, without breaking religious customs.
Mantra chanting is encouraged
Even if you cannot participate in traditional rituals, mantra chanting in Lord Shiva’s name is not restricted. According to belief, this still pleases the deity and keeps the sanctity of the vrat intact.
Conclude the fast on the 17th Monday
If you’ve committed to the 16 Somwar Vrat and happen to menstruate during any of the weeks, you can perform the udhyapan (ritual conclusion) of the vrat on the 17th Monday instead. It is believed that Lord Shiva understands the devotee’s circumstances and grants full merit for the fast, even with such modifications.
In Hindu tradition, the 16 Somwar Vrat is about devotion, faith, and commitment—not strict physical rituals alone. If you experience your period during the vrat, you can still continue your fast, recite mantras, and complete the vow with full devotion. The key is intention—and Lord Shiva, known as Bholenath, is said to be easily pleased with sincere faith.
