Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Vijay Deverakonda might be coming together for Arjun Reddy, as the filmmaker has shared plans to revisit the 2017 blockbuster film with an extended version for its 10th anniversary. Nearly a decade after Arjun Reddy changed the careers of both Vanga and Deverakonda, the prospect of an extended cut is welcome and has already left many excited. The project is still in its planning stages, although the filmmaker has said he is interested in reworking the film and adding new material. The director-actor duo even had a social media exchange on the same, leaving fans in a frenzy.
Vijay Deverakonda marks 9 years of Arjun Reddy
On August 26, Deverakonda and Vanga celebrated 9 years of the movie’s release. On X (formerly Twitter), Deverakonda reminded Vanga about their conversation from 2024. The original post had the actor saying, “Give the people ‘The SandeepVanga #ArjunReddy full cut’ for the 10 years anniversary @imvangasandeep!” Vanga had replied then, “Vijay…. for sure we should make it for the 10th anniversary. Missing you more today #7YearsOfArjunReddy”
Deverakonda reposted the same previous exchange as a reminder. “9 years now. Next year we shall meet again. In the cinema halls. With love, Arjun,” he assured the netizens.
Arjun Reddy built Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s career
Vijay Deverakonda was the lead in Arjun Reddy, which marked the directorial debut of Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Released in 2017, the Telugu romantic drama was one of the most discussed movies of the time. The movie revolves around the character of Arjun Reddy, a brilliant but self-destructive medical student whose intense relationship and emotional struggles are the core of the story.
The film evoked strong feelings with its treatment of love, anger, masculinity, and relationships. Arjun Reddy, in spite of the controversy regarding the themes, built a cult following.
Later, Vanga remade the film in Hindi with Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani as Kabir Singh. The remake was a big hit at the box office too, cementing Vanga’s status as a filmmaker with a unique voice.
Longer version possible for 10th anniversary
The Animal director recently reacted to his plans. According to Gulte, he said that he and Deverakonda were planning to make an extended version of Arjun Reddy around the 10th anniversary of the film. The project is, however, not yet ready for production.
To introduce new material, the filmmaker explained, he would have to go back and rework the existing film. Meanwhile, Deverakonda is reportedly required to dub the new portions for about 2-3 days. The filmmaker estimates that he would require around 15-20 days to work on the extended version, and Vanga will have to spend a lot more time on the project. And that’s been difficult with his busy schedule.
A 10th-anniversary extended cut could potentially include additional footage, scenes, or moments that were not part of the theatrical version. However, Vanga’s current commitments, mainly with Animal Park, mean there is no confirmed release plan yet.
Arjun Reddy’s return is awaited
The extended cut being proposed would be a big deal as Arjun Reddy is still one of the most important films in the careers of both Vanga and Deverakonda. For Vanga, it was the beginning of a filmmaking journey that later led to films such as Kabir Singh and Animal. For Deverakonda, the film became a major turning point, transforming him into one of Telugu cinema’s most recognised young stars.
The gritty performance by the actor in the title role became synonymous with his image and helped him gather a large following outside the traditional Telugu film audience. An extended version could thus give fans a chance to go back to the film almost 10 years after its original release.
Arjun Reddy’s impact
The film’s influence continued even after its release, particularly through Kabir Singh. Both versions generated debate over their portrayal of toxic relationships, anger, and male behaviour, while also developing dedicated fan bases.
