Tata Motors appears to have commenced road testing of the next-generation Nexon, expected to launch sometime in 2027. Internally codenamed Garud, the new compact SUV has now been spotted under heavy camouflage, revealing significant changes to its body structure and overall profile.
Nexon was originally launched in 2017 and received major facelifts in 2020 and 2023. Currently, Nexon is one of the top selling SUV in the country. A 2027 launch for the second-generation model would give the current Nexon a lifecycle of almost ten years.
Next-gen Tata Nexon – What has changed?
Although the prototype retains recognisable Nexon proportions, a closer comparison with the current model reveals multiple panel-level changes. One of the most noticeable revisions is around the C-pillar, which appears more upright and substantial. Rear door look completely new.
The current Nexon has a strongly rearward-sloping roofline that creates a coupe-inspired profile but can limit the feeling of space towards the back. The altered C-pillar and less pronounced roof slope on the test mule could improve rear-seat headroom while giving the SUV a more balanced side profile.
Another important change is visible around the A-pillar. Its upper edge appears sharper and more angular, unlike the rounded transition seen on the current Nexon. This suggests that Tata is making deeper structural changes rather than simply replacing exterior panels for another facelift.
However, an altered A-pillar does not necessarily confirm an entirely new platform. Earlier reports indicated that the next-generation Nexon will retain a heavily modified version of the existing X1 architecture.
More angular rear profile
The rear windscreen on the test mule appears flatter and more angular than the curved glass used on the current model. Tata also seems to be testing a redesigned tailgate, larger roof spoiler and revised rear bumper. The heavy camouflage also conceals the final surfacing, although wider rear haunches and modified wheel arches are noticeable.
Temporary tail lights have been fitted, which are of current Nexon; indicating that the production tail lamps are still under development. Same alloy wheels and provisional exterior components suggest that this is an early-stage development mule. Later prototypes should reveal more production-ready design details.
Engine options and launch timeline
Next-generation Nexon is expected to continue with petrol, flex fuel and CNG powertrains. The future of its 1.5-litre diesel engine remains uncertain, as upgrading it to comply with upcoming emission regulations could increase costs.
A corresponding new-generation Nexon EV is also expected, although Tata may introduce the combustion and electric versions at different times. The interior should receive a complete redesign with newer displays, connected technology and additional safety features.
Upon launch in 2027, the new Nexon will continue to challenge Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Maruti Brezza and upcoming SUVs like in the sub 4m SUV segment.
