Bengaluru: In a new step that mixes technology with public awareness, a busy traffic spot in Bengaluru—Trinity Circle—now has a digital billboard that shows traffic rule violations connected to vehicles passing by. The billboard works with smart cameras powered by AI.
These cameras can read vehicle number plates from as far as 100 meters away. In about ten seconds, the system checks the vehicle’s details using the national VAHAN database. If there are any unpaid traffic fines, expired Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, or other issues, they appear right on the screen, according to a report by Moneycontrol.
Aim to make commuters aware
This move isn’t only about getting drivers to pay fines or renew documents. The goal is to make people more aware and responsible on the road. Gajendra Jangid, the co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Cars24—the company behind this idea—told the publication that they’re not just asking people to settle dues, but also showing them that every good action while driving helps the whole city. This effort is also supported by CrashFree India and Monday Ventures, the report added.
The Bengaluru traffic police believe that showing violations in real-time could change the way people behave. A senior officer involved in the project said that by displaying the effects of breaking rules immediately, they hope more people will drive carefully and follow traffic laws, the report said.
This tech-based awareness campaign comes at a time when the number of traffic rule breaks in the city is very high. Between August 23 and September 12, more than 37.8 lakh traffic violations were recorded. These led to fines worth Rs 106 crore, helped partly by a temporary 50% discount on old challans offered by the state government.
