Europe remains reliant on older models, with updates reportedly not expected until late 2027.
- Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden collectively show only 15 vehicle configurations.
- German registrations plunged 89% to 18 vehicles through July, while Dutch registrations fell 88% to eight.
- Norway remained an outlier, recording 211 Nio and Firefly registrations through Aug.23.
U.S.-listed shares of Nio, Inc. (NIO) slid over 2% in Monday’s premarket trading session as the Chinese EV maker’s European push lost momentum amid shrinking inventory and a steep decline in registrations.
Nio’s U.S.-listed shares have fallen 5% this month and are on track for a fourth consecutive monthly decline.
Nio’s Inventory Dries Up
Nio’s websites in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden collectively show only 15 vehicle configurations, according to EV. Germany lists six configurations across two models, Sweden has one EL8, and the Netherlands shows eight configurations—none available immediately.
The figures represent configurations rather than physical cars, as Nio does not disclose how many vehicles each listing covers. Norway remains the exception, with 106 available configurations across four models. Unlike European Union markets, Norway is not subject to the combined 30.7% tariff imposed on Nio’s China-built EVs.
Nio registered just three vehicles in Germany in July, down 93.6% year over year. Registrations through July fell 89.3% to 18 vehicles. In the Netherlands, Nio-brand registrations dropped 87.9% to eight. Germany and the Netherlands together recorded only 26 Nio-brand registrations during the first seven months of 2026.
Norway performed comparatively better, recording 211 registrations across Nio and its Firefly sub-brand through Aug. 23.
Europe Waits For New Nio Models
Nio’s current European vehicles were built in 2023 or 2024 on its older NT 2.0 platform. Newer models sold in China, including the third-generation ES8, ES9 and ET9, have not been announced for Europe.
The company reportedly told European owners that model updates would not arrive until late 2027. Meanwhile, it has used zero-percent financing and German price cuts of up to 37% to clear older stock. Nio has also closed four European locations in nine months, including its flagship Hamburg showroom, and shifted Denmark from direct sales to a distributor-led model.
However, Nio maintains that it remains committed to the region. “Europe is and remains a central part of Nio’s global commitment, and Norway is one of the markets where we have the strongest foundation,” Nio Norway General Manager An Ho said in June. The company called some coverage of its operations an “unnuanced picture,” while a spokesperson said this month that Nio “has no plans to retreat from Europe.”
Nio ES8 Momentum Builds In China
Separately, Nio’s third-gen ES8 reached 140,000 cumulative deliveries in China. The flagship electric SUV added its latest 10,000 deliveries in just 30 days after reaching 130,000 on July 22. Its five-seat version, launched on July 9, has helped broaden the model’s appeal beyond the premium three-row SUV market.
The ES8 recorded more than 10,000 retail sales in July, ranking first among China’s large SUVs and vehicles priced above 400,000 yuan ($58,980), according to China Passenger Car Association data cited by Nio. It delivered 88,947 units during the first seven months of 2026, representing about 39% of Nio’s total deliveries.
