Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy on Sunday alleged that the BJP was disturbing the atmosphere of Jadavpur University after a clash between two groups of students during a general body meeting at the varsity.
Speaking in Kolkata, Roy said, “Why did a BJP MLA go to Jadavpur and threaten to wreak havoc all night, vowing to single out students and punish them? That is not the language or behaviour one should adopt towards students. Jadavpur is an excellent university, but the BJP is spoiling its atmosphere.”
He alleged that the BJP had failed to deliver on its promises and said, “They haven’t done any work worth showcasing, and the law-and-order situation is dire. BJP members are committing atrocities and engaging in extortion everywhere.”
Referring to protests over “non-payment” of Annapurna Bhandar in Birati, Roy said, “Didn’t you see what happened yesterday? Women across Bengal blocked railway lines. People in Birati and elsewhere are unhappy. None of the promises made has been fulfilled…Even Amit Shah wouldn’t be able to improve this situation.”
Targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah further, the TMC MP said, “Amit Shah’s only job seems to be criticising the Trinamool Congress; he has no other work.”
On the night of August 19, a physical altercation reportedly broke out between two groups of students at Jadavpur University during a General Body Meeting, leaving two ABVP members injured. The General Body Meeting was organised by students affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU) at around 9 pm at Arbindo Bhawan inside the university campus. The incident occurred during a meeting related to the constitution of the FETSU Union, with students from different political affiliations reportedly opposing each other’s positions.
According to the report, Left-wing supporters allegedly attempted to constitute the union unilaterally during the meeting. The move was opposed by ABVP supporters Diptiman Kar and Nikhil Das, the ABVP president.
Following the opposition, a physical altercation reportedly took place between the two groups on the university campus.
The injured ABVP members, Nikhil Das and Diptiman Kar, were subsequently taken to KPC Hospital in Jadavpur for treatment.
Around midnight, MLA Sarbari Mukherjee, accompanied by supporters, arrived at Jadavpur Police Station to lodge a complaint.
