Dia Mirza, who is one of the most beautiful Bollywood actresses ever, has revealed a shocking secret. In an exclusive conversation with Zoom, the actor opened up about why she avoids looking at mirrors or even checking the monitor during shoots. For Dia, the decision is about protecting her peace of mind from becoming consumed by her appearance. While acknowledging that looking good is naturally a part of the profession, she believes her focus should remain on the character, the moment and the truth within a performance.
Dia Mirza Says She Does Not Look At The Mirror Or Monitor
Dia revealed that she has deliberately avoided checking her appearance while shooting for almost 20 years. “I haven’t looked at the mirror when I’m on a film shoot for almost 20 years. I don’t look at the mirror, nor do I look at the monitor. I never go and check the shot. It’s so liberating to do that. It’s wonderful,” she told us.
For an actor, checking the monitor after a take can be a routine part of filmmaking. Performers often want to understand how they appear on camera, whether their expressions are working or whether a particular shot looks the way they imagined. Dia, however, has consciously chosen to step away from that process. She explained that she understood quite early in her career that becoming too invested in her appearance was not healthy for her.
Rather than worrying about how she looks on screen, said she makes a conscious effort to focus on the performance itself. “I have always consciously made an effort to focus on the depth of the moment, the depth of the conversation, the truths in a line, and not so much on how I look,” the actor said. Dia also acknowledged that appearance remains an important part of filmmaking. Hair, makeup and costumes are carefully planned, and she does not dismiss the effort that goes into creating a character’s visual identity.
For her, however, that preparation is about more than looking attractive. “I always think about what the clothes I’m wearing represent. Which artisan worked on them? What is the fabric? What is the textile? What dyes were used? There is a thought that goes into all of that. But once that is done, it’s done,” she said.
Vanity Comes At The Cost Of Your Peace Of Mind: Dia Mirza
Dia believes that excessive focus on appearance can affect one’s mental space. “Vanity comes at a cost. It comes at the cost of your peace of mind, and I never want to be caught up in that,” she said. Dia expressed concern about young girls being made to feel inadequate because of the way they look.
“Young girls are being pressured to undergo cosmetic enhancements or are repeatedly being told that they are not good enough. And there are so many incredibly beautiful girls already,” she said. She hopes her own approach can encourage women and girls to build a healthier relationship with their appearance. “Of course, effort should be made towards exercise, health, wellbeing and self-care, but we cannot get so caught up in the external that it minimises us and who we are,” Dia added.
