IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Mohammed Siraj charged with hefty fine for fiery Ben Duckett send-off

New Delhi: Star pacer Mohammed Siraj has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for his behaviour during the ongoing third Test against England at Lord’s. Additionally, he has been handed one demerit point for his aggressive celebration after dismissing England opener Ben Duckett on Day 4.

The incident occurred in the sixth over of England’s second innings when Siraj, after dismissing Duckett for 12 runs, gave him a fiery send-off, brushing shoulders with the opener on his way back. This marked Siraj’s second offence in two years, taking his tally of demerit points in the last 24 months to two. Earlier, he was handed a demerit point during the second Test against Australia in Adelaide.

According to the ICC Code of Conduct, Siraj was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions, or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match.”

In a statement, the ICC said, “Siraj admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.” Siraj’s fiery celebration was one of several intense moments on Day 4, a day that saw 14 wickets fall at Lord’s.

When does a player get suspended?

A player is suspended when they accumulate four or more demerit points within a 24-month period. These demerit points are then converted into suspension points, leading to a ban.
