Singer Sonu Nigam’s legal battle over his social media identity has reached a significant development, with the Bombay High Court recording a settlement between the parties. The dispute involved the singer and a namesake over concerns surrounding the use of his identity online. Sonu Nigam had approached the court seeking protection against the unauthorised use of his name, image and other aspects of his personality. The matter had also raised concerns about possible confusion among social media users regarding whether certain accounts were connected to, endorsed by or owned by the singer. The latest court proceedings have now brought the dispute closer to its conclusion.

As per Free Press Journal, The dispute between singer Sonu Nigam and his namesake, Sonu Nigam Singh, has now been settled before the Bombay High Court. Justice Madhav Jamdar recorded the settlement on August 13 after lawyers representing both parties informed the court that they had reached an amicable resolution.

Both sides submitted consent terms before the court. The terms were accepted as undertakings, with the court recording the agreement in its order. Sonu Nigam’s attorney, Saira Dawood Makani, appeared in person, while Sonu Nigam Singh participated in the proceedings through video conferencing. Both parties confirmed that they had agreed to the terms of the settlement.

About Sonu Nigam social media identity dispute

 had approached the Bombay High Court seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights. His plea sought an injunction against Sonu Nigam Singh and anyone acting in association with him from using the singer’s name “Sonu Nigam”, along with his image, likeness and other identifiable aspects of his personality without permission.

The singer had also raised concerns that the use of similar names, identifiers and images on social media could potentially confuse members of the public. There were apprehensions that users could mistakenly believe that certain social media accounts or services were associated with, endorsed by or owned by the singer. The petition further sought restrictions on the reproduction, publication, uploading, circulation and dissemination of content that allegedly infringed upon his personality rights.

The latest settlement comes after an ad-interim order issued by the Bombay High Court on July 11, 2025. The order had restrained   Nigam Singh, as well as anyone acting through him, from using “Sonu Nigam” as a display name or account name on social media platforms. During the latest hearing, the lawyers informed the court that the earlier order had been complied with and that the dispute had subsequently been resolved between the parties.

Justice Madhav Jamdar recorded the consent terms in the latest order, noting that the statements contained in the agreement would be treated as undertakings given to the court. With the settlement formally recorded, the Bombay High Court disposed of the commercial intellectual property suit, bringing the legal dispute surrounding the singer’s name and social media identity to an end.
