New Delhi: Seasoned Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for some break from the red-ball cricket. The middle-order batter has citied fatigue and back stiffness as the issues behind his demand.
According to a report in the Indian Express, Iyer wrote a letter to the Indian cricket board on Tuesday saying that he wants to remain off the ground for a while as it is taking a toll on his physical health. However, a reply to Iyer’s letter is still awaited.
Iyer discusses with Agarkar before formal plea
This comes after Iyer, who was named the skipper of India A team, suddenly pulled off of the second unofficial Test match against Australia starting Tuesday citing personal reasons. The report further mentions that the senior batter had a discussion with selectors and chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar and then only decided to make his plea formal.
It is further being learnt that Iyer can’t be on the field for more than four days which is the reason behind him taking a break. The report additionally mentions that the India cricketer informed the board that he played the Ranji Trophy game last year where he managed to take a break in between the overs but he can’t do the same for India A or while playing a Test match.
Iyer was also in contention to play the two Test matches at home against the West Indies next month but now it looks like he will not be taking part in the same. This is the reason why he was named in the India A squad for the unofficial Test match against Australia but due to health issues, he pulled off. Despite having a good outing for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, Iyer was ignored for the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.
